SYSTEM code execution via malicious OpenVPN configuration

Published Aug 2, 2021 · Updated Sep 17, 2024

Privilege escalation in MB connect line mbDIALUP 3.9R0.0 and earlier allows local users to execute arbitrary code as SYSTEM. The mbConnect24serv service accepts a low-privileged caller's command and starts OpenVPN with an attacker-controlled configuration containing script directives. Local low-privileged access is required; successful exploitation runs the configuration's commands with the service's NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM privileges.
