Application hang via data URL regex backtracking
Published May 24, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
ReDoS in normalize-url 4.3.0 through 4.5.0, 5.0.0 through 5.3.0, and 6.0.0 allows remote attackers to hang applications. The normalizeDataURL function applies overlapping lazy wildcard groups to the media type, payload, and optional fragment, causing exponential regex backtracking on crafted data URLs. Exposure requires an application to pass attacker-controlled data URLs to the library; CPU exhaustion then blocks the Node.js event loop and interrupts service.
