Service crash via unbounded JSON array recursion
Published Jul 26, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Stack overflow in mJS before 2.20.0 allows local users to crash an application by opening a file with deeply nested JSON arrays. The json_parse_array function repeatedly invokes json_parse_value for nested arrays without limiting nesting depth, exhausting the process stack. Exploitation requires local file execution and user interaction; the demonstrated consequence is process termination, not code execution.
