Code execution via unsanitized Markdown HTML
Published May 17, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Cross-site scripting in vmd 1.34.0 and earlier allows context-dependent attackers to execute code through a crafted Markdown file. The Electron renderer places unsanitized Markdown HTML in the div.markdown-body container, allowing event handlers to invoke exposed Node.js APIs. A user must open the malicious file and interact with payloads such as a mouseover link; successful exploitation runs commands with the vmd process's privileges.
