Account takeover via unchecked image blob MIME type
Published Jun 15, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Cross-site scripting in Wire Web App before 2021-06-01-production.0 allows remote attackers to take over accounts through crafted images. The image asset component passed downloaded blobs to URL.createObjectURL without checking MIME type, allowing HTML payloads to run on app.wire.com. Exploitation requires a user to open the image in a new tab or paste its URL into the address bar, after which the attacker gains full control of that account.
