Protected-data access via unescaped trace JSON
Published Jun 7, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Reflected XSS in Datasette before 0.56.1 allows remote attackers to run script in a user's browser through a crafted trace request. The ?_trace=1 debugging path embeds its generated JSON in an HTML response without correctly escaping attacker-controlled content. Exploitation requires a user to open the crafted URL; script running in the Datasette origin can access protected data when authentication plugins are installed.
