Code execution via out-of-bounds error-string read
Published Sep 20, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Global-buffer overflow in libiff through 20190123 allows attackers to execute code when a crafted IFF file is parsed. IFF_errorId reads beyond a one-byte empty-string object while formatting an invalid chunk identifier, as demonstrated by the public AddressSanitizer trace. The demonstrated path requires an application or user to process an attacker-supplied IFF file; the proof of concept establishes a process abort, while the CVE record asserts code execution.
