Code execution via oversized pcapng option length
Published Sep 20, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Global buffer overflow in hcxtools 6.1.6 and earlier allows local users to execute code by processing a crafted pcapng file. The pcapngoptionwalk function trusts the file's option_length field and passes an oversized length to memcpy, writing beyond the 1,024-byte global nmeasentence buffer. Exploitation requires a user to process an attacker-supplied capture file; the public proof of concept demonstrates an AddressSanitizer abort, while the CVE record identifies code execution as the ultimate impact.
