Unauthenticated service access via AUTO_PASSTHROUGH routing
Published Jun 2, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Authorization bypass in Istio before 1.8.6 and 1.9.0 through 1.9.4 allows remote attackers to access unintended cluster services. AUTO_PASSTHROUGH gateway routing exposes service destinations without applying the expected authorization checks to external client traffic. The flaw is reachable without authentication only when an AUTO_PASSTHROUGH Gateway is deployed, a mode typically used in multi-network, multi-cluster environments.
