Stored XSS via unescaped configuration values
Published Apr 22, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Cross-site scripting in the CommentBox extension for MediaWiki through 1.35.2 allows attackers to inject HTML through configuration values. Hooks.php places CommentboxRows and CommentboxColumns values into generated form markup without validation; the patch replaces manual markup with escaping HTML helpers. Exploitation requires write access to LocalSettings.php or equivalent configuration control, which already permits arbitrary server-side code and HTML changes.
