CVE-2021-31262

MP4Box crash via unchecked AV1 configuration pointer

Published Apr 19, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

A NULL pointer dereference in GPAC 1.0.1 allows local users to crash MP4Box by processing a crafted AV1 media file. AV1_RewriteESDescriptorEx and gf_isom_av1_config_get pass a nested AV1 configuration pointer to AV1_DuplicateConfig after checking only its parent wrapper, so a missing inner configuration is dereferenced. Execution requires a user or local workflow to make MP4Box process the crafted file, and the demonstrated consequence is an application crash rather than data access or modification.
