Admin-to-root escalation via unsafe VESTA environment import
Published Apr 8, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Privilege escalation in VestaCP 0.9.8-24 and earlier allows remote authenticated users with admin access to execute commands as root. The v-list-user script imports main.sh from the path held in the attacker-controlled VESTA environment variable, while sudoers permits admin to run VestaCP scripts as root without a password. An attacker must first control the VestaCP admin account or shell; successful exploitation grants unrestricted root command execution.
