Authenticated page-protection escalation via incomplete API authorization
Published Apr 9, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Improper privilege management in MediaWiki before 1.31.13 and 1.32.0 through 1.35.1 allows remote authenticated users to raise page protection. ApiProtect validates a requested level against the global RestrictionLevels list rather than the levels permitted for the requesting user. An account with the protect right can impose a higher restriction through action=protect and can remove it when editing and protection are unrestricted.
