Code execution via mf URL heap overflow
Published May 18, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Format string injection in mpv through 0.33.0 allows remote attackers to execute code when a user opens a crafted M3U playlist. The mf demuxer's open_mf_pattern function passes an attacker-controlled filename to sprintf as the format string and writes the expanded result into an undersized heap buffer. Exploitation requires a user to open the playlist and environment-specific heap manipulation; the demonstrated proof of concept uses Ubuntu 20.04.2 with ASLR disabled.
