Markdown file disclosure via unvalidated note alias
Published Apr 26, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Path traversal in HedgeDoc before 1.8.0 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary Markdown files through a crafted note alias. The router passes the encoded alias through noteController.showNote, findNote, and parseNoteId before path.join appends the Markdown extension without reducing the value to a basename. No authentication is required, but disclosure is limited to readable Markdown files and can be constrained by filesystem permissions, containers, or chroots.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
