Authenticated file disclosure via WAVE metadata parsing
Published Apr 15, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
XXE in the WordPress 5.6.0 through 5.7 Media Library allows remote authenticated users to read server files through crafted audio uploads. The getID3 XML2array method parses a WAVE file's attacker-controlled iXML chunk with LIBXML_NOENT, which substitutes external entities under PHP 8. Exploitation requires the upload_files capability, normally held by Authors, and supports blind file disclosure or server-side requests.
