Session hijacking via reused pre-authentication identifier
Published Jan 20, 2023 · Updated Apr 3, 2025
Session fixation in CuppaCMS through the November 12, 2019 commit allows remote attackers to access arbitrary user sessions after a victim logs in. The login flow preserves the attacker-supplied unauthenticated session identifier instead of invalidating it and issuing a new identifier after successful authentication. Exploitation requires inducing a victim to use the known identifier and authenticate, after which the attacker can reuse it to assume the victim's session.
