Cross-site scripting via Unicode lowercasing bypass
Published Mar 27, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Cross-site scripting in bluemonday before 1.0.5 allows remote attackers to execute JavaScript through sanitized HTML viewed by a user. The Policy.sanitize path applies strings.ToLower to tag names, converting the uppercase Cyrillic İ in a crafted scrİpt tag to ASCII script and emitting its content without HTML escaping. Exploitation requires an application to sanitize attacker-controlled HTML and render the result for a user, exposing that user's browser context to script execution.
