Process hang via complex-number regex backtracking
Published Jun 21, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Regular expression denial of service in mpmath 1.0.0 through 1.2.1 allows attackers to hang a calling process via a crafted string. The get_complex pattern in ctx_mp.py applies overlapping optional digit and decimal matches to complex-number text, causing excessive backtracking on invalid input. The flaw is reached only when an application passes attacker-controlled text to mpmathify, so exposure and hang duration depend on the consuming application.
