Application hang via catastrophic URI regex backtracking
Published Jun 21, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Regular expression denial of service in Vfsjfilechooser2 before 0.2.9 allows remote attackers to hang applications via crafted URIs. VFSURIValidator applies its p_ftp2 regular expression to invalid FTP URIs whose repeated delimiter pattern triggers excessive backtracking. Any consuming application that passes attacker-controlled URI text to VFSURIValidator.isValid is exposed to CPU exhaustion and a resulting service hang.
