Windows GUI hang via unthrottled title changes
Published Jun 3, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Denial of service in Mintty before 3.4.5 allows remote attackers controlling terminal output to hang its Windows GUI through title changes. The title-update path invokes SetWindowTextA or SetWindowTextW for each rapid title change without a delay or equivalent throttling. Exploitation requires a remote server to emit high-frequency terminal-title changes into an active session, and the documented consequence is a GUI hang.
