CVE-2021-28680Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Account impersonation via forged masquerade session state

Published Dec 7, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Authentication bypass in devise_masquerade before 1.3.1 allows remote authenticated users to impersonate any application user. The masquerade-back handler trusts the devise_masquerade_user value in an encrypted session cookie, letting a forged value select the return identity without that user's password salt. Exploitation requires a leaked Rails secret_key_base, a valid user login, and the target user's ID; successful use grants the target account's privileges.
