Memory unsafety via unvalidated X atom names
Published Feb 9, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Soundness violation in the Rust xcb crate before 1.0.0 allows remote attackers controlling an X server to induce memory unsafety. GetAtomNameReply::name() passes raw atom-name bytes to std::str::from_utf8_unchecked() without validating UTF-8 before returning an &str. Exploitation requires a client to request an attacker-controlled atom name, exposing consuming code to undefined behavior.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
