Local root escalation via OverlayFS directory race
Published Feb 8, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Privilege escalation in Firejail before 0.9.64.4 allows local users to gain root access through a race in OverlayFS setup. The fs_overlayfs function checks directory ownership and permissions with stat, then mounts by absolute path, allowing a rename to substitute user-controlled upper and work directories. Any local user with a writable home directory in /etc/passwd who can invoke Firejail can redirect privileged file operations to host files.
