Iframe allowlist bypass via backslash URL parsing
Published Feb 8, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Improper input validation in Apostrophe Technologies sanitize-html before 2.3.2 allows attackers to bypass iframe hostname restrictions. The iframe src validator passes browser-tolerated backslashes and intervening whitespace to the WHATWG parser without first normalizing them as URL separators. When allowedIframeHostnames and allowIframeRelativeUrls are both enabled, sanitized HTML can retain an iframe that loads content from a non-allowlisted host.
