Iframe allowlist bypass via divergent IDN parsing
Published Feb 8, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Hostname validation bypass in Apostrophe Technologies sanitize-html before 2.3.1 allows remote attackers to retain disallowed iframe sources. The allowedIframeHostnames check uses Node.js url.parse, which interprets a crafted internationalized hostname differently from a browser and treats an attacker-controlled source as allowlisted. The gate is application use of allowed iframe tags and the allowedIframeHostnames option; successful input preserves an iframe source outside the configured trust boundary.
