PHP code execution via exposed template object
Published Feb 22, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Sandbox escape in Smarty before 3.1.39 allows context-dependent attackers to execute PHP code through an untrusted template. Smarty_Internal_Compile_Private_Special_Variable::compile returns the live Smarty_Internal_Template object for $smarty.template_object even when a security policy is active. An application must render attacker-controlled Smarty syntax; the exposed object permits the template to disable security or overwrite a compiled template file for code execution.
