Local protected-data access via implicit intent grants
Published Jun 11, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Improper input validation in Samsung Contacts before SMR JUN-2021 Release 1 allows local users to read protected provider data. The exported SetProfilePhotoActivity places an attacker-controlled cropped_photo_uri in ClipData, then launches an implicit crop intent with read and write URI grants. A malicious app installed on an affected Android 9, 10, or 11 device can intercept that intent and query data exposed through Contacts-privileged content providers.
