Site takeover via unprotected settings update
Published Feb 28, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Cross-site request forgery in Core Tweaks WP Setup 4.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to take over WordPress sites. The settings page accepts a changecore POST without a CSRF token, allowing admin_email replacement or creation of an administrator account. An authenticated administrator must visit attacker-controlled content; the forged request then runs with that administrator's session.
