Code execution via XLSX object use-after-free
Published Feb 25, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Use-after-free in Microsoft Excel XLSX parsing allows attackers to execute code as the current user through a crafted workbook. The parser fails to validate that an object still exists before operating on it, leaving a freed object usable during workbook processing. Exploitation requires the targeted user to visit a malicious page or open the crafted file; Preview Pane rendering alone does not trigger the flaw.
