Process hang via unbounded regex backtracking
Published Apr 12, 2021 · Updated Sep 16, 2024
Regular expression denial of service in chrono-node before 2.2.4 allows remote attackers to hang a consuming process via crafted date text. Time-unit patterns permit unrestricted whitespace and repeated-unit matching, causing catastrophic backtracking on date-like strings with many embedded spaces. Exploitation requires a consuming application to pass attacker-controlled text to the parser, and the demonstrated consequence is a process hang.
