Response injection via cached pre-TLS replies
Published Sep 29, 2021 · Updated Apr 16, 2026
Improper response validation in curl 7.20.0 through 7.78.0 allows man-in-the-middle attackers to inject fake IMAP or POP3 data via STARTTLS. The protocol state machines preserve pipelined plaintext replies in the pingpong cache across TLS negotiation and consume them as replies to encrypted commands. The attacker must control the network path; injected IMAP or POP3 content is presented as authenticated server data.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
