CVE-2021-22916Network attack vector

DNS query disclosure via proxy-bypassing CNAME resolution

Published Jul 12, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Information disclosure in Brave Browser 1.17 through 1.26.60 allows remote attackers to expose DNS queries outside a configured proxy. The CNAME adblocking feature resolves canonical hostnames through system DNS instead of honoring an installed proxy extension's routing settings. Exploitation requires adblocking and a proxy extension to be enabled; the resulting DNS traffic reveals requested hostnames to the system DNS provider.
