Authenticated node crash via recursive Grok query
Published Jul 26, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Uncontrolled recursion in Elasticsearch 6.x before 6.8.17 and 7.x before 7.13.3 allows remote authenticated users to crash a node. Elastic has not published the exact parser function or recursion path; its advisory identifies unbounded recursion triggered while parsing a malicious Grok query. The attacker must have permission to submit arbitrary Elasticsearch queries; successful exploitation interrupts service on the affected node without reported data disclosure or modification.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
