CVE-2021-21703Public exploit

Root privilege escalation via writable scoreboard pointers

Published Oct 25, 2021 · Updated Sep 17, 2024

Out-of-bounds writes in PHP-FPM 7.3.x through 7.3.31, 7.4.x before 7.4.25, and 8.0.x before 8.0.12 allow local users to gain root privileges. PHP-FPM stores worker-scoreboard pointers in shared memory writable by child processes, then the root master dereferences those attacker-controlled pointers during worker allocation and cleanup. Exploitation requires PHP code execution and a worker-memory read/write primitive in a deployment whose master runs as root and workers run with lower privileges.
