Remote code execution via injected object graph
Published Mar 22, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Deserialization in XStream before 1.4.16 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by submitting a crafted input stream. The unmarshaller instantiates attacker-selected types from stream metadata; a crafted PriorityQueue object graph reaches JdbcRowSetImpl and loads code through an attacker-controlled RMI URL. Exposure requires an application to unmarshal attacker-controlled data with XStream's default blacklist rather than a restrictive type whitelist.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
