Root code execution and reload via stack overflow
Published Feb 4, 2021 · Updated Nov 8, 2024
Stack overflows in Cisco RV router firmware allow remote authenticated users to execute root code through crafted HTTP requests. The web management interface improperly validates request data before handling it in fixed-size stack buffers; affected releases are 4.2.3.14 and earlier for RV016, RV042, RV042G, and RV082, and 1.5.1.11 and earlier for RV320 and RV325. Valid administrator credentials are required; the interface is always reachable from the local LAN and is reachable from the WAN only when remote management is enabled, which is disabled by default, and exploitation yields root code execution or a device reload.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
