Local privilege escalation via freed SurfaceFlinger object
Published Dec 15, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Use-after-free in Android 12 SurfaceFlinger allows local users to escalate privileges through a crafted client-state transaction. setClientStateLocked in SurfaceFlinger.cpp accesses a freed object and then performs an out-of-bounds write while applying client state. Exploitation requires local low-privileged access but no user interaction, and successful memory corruption grants elevated execution privileges.
