CVE-2021-1019

Local privilege escalation via incomplete consent disclosure

Published Dec 15, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Privilege escalation in Android 12 allows local users to gain elevated capabilities through a misleading notification-listener consent dialog. The Settings consent text for NotificationListenerService omits that an approved listener can snooze notifications, so users authorize broader control than the dialog discloses. Exploitation requires an app with user-level execution and user interaction with the deceptive consent flow; the record does not identify the exact elevated privilege.
