Local privilege escalation via unblocked UI overlays
Published Dec 15, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Tapjacking in Android 10 and 11 allows local users to escalate privileges by overlaying the ResolverActivity app-selection screen. ResolverActivity did not set the system flag that hides non-system overlay windows, so another app could cover the chooser and redirect a user's tap. Exploitation requires execution of a malicious app and user interaction with the overlaid chooser; the result is privilege gain in the user's context.
