CVE-2021-0661Public exploit

Local privilege escalation via unchecked DSP message length

Published Oct 25, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Heap-based buffer overflow in MediaTek audio DSP firmware on Android 9.0 through 11.0 allows local users to escalate privileges. The AUDIO_DSP_TASK_MSGA2DSHAREMEM handler trusts the param1 length when task_common_task_loop copies an IPI payload into the 0x20-byte atod_share field, allowing an oversized payload to overwrite adjacent heap memory. Access requires System privileges and permission to open /dev/audio_ipi; no user interaction is required, and the published proof of concept corrupts DSP memory and crashes the device.
