Local privilege escalation via automatic domain verification
Published Feb 10, 2021 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Privilege escalation in Google Cloud Android 8.1 through 11 allows local users to make an app the default handler for arbitrary domains. ResolverActivity.onTargetSelected calls updateIntentVerificationStatusAsUser after an app is chosen as Always, granting complete verification for every domain it declares, including unowned domains. A user-level malicious app can capture later web-link resolutions without further prompts or user interaction.
