Stored script execution via unchecked widget titles
Published Feb 24, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Injection in the Widgets extension for MediaWiki 1.4.0 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to execute wiki pages as widgets. WidgetRenderer passes the parser function's untrusted widget name to the wiki Smarty resource without enforcing the Widget namespace, so other pages are compiled as widget content. An account able to edit and invoke {{#widget:}} can cause stored style or script content to run when the affected page is rendered, compromising page confidentiality and integrity.
