Account takeover via unauthenticated password changes

Published Apr 27, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024

Improper authentication in Fortinet FortiMail and FortiVoice Enterprise allows remote attackers to take over legitimate user accounts. The web-interface password-change workflow accepts a reset request without authenticating the requester, then changes credentials for an existing user. No prior account is required, and the new password grants the requester that user's access to mail or voice-system functions.
