HTTPS interception via unchecked upstream certificates
Published Mar 9, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Improper certificate validation in Avast AntiTrack and AVG AntiTrack allows man-in-the-middle attackers to intercept HTTPS traffic. Before 1.5.1.172 and 2.0.0.178 respectively, the local filtering proxy accepts an upstream self-signed certificate and then mints a browser-trusted certificate. The default enabled HTTPS filtering setting requires no victim action and exposes credentials and session cookies without granting host access or interrupting service.
