SYSTEM privilege escalation via symlinked file move
Published Feb 12, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Link following in AMD User Experience Program Launcher 1.0.0.1 and earlier allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges on Windows. The AUEPLauncher service moves a crafted upload with SYSTEM rights while following a symbolic link in the user-writable PPC temp directory to an attacker-chosen path. A local low-privileged account that can write the PPC directories can turn the privileged move into arbitrary file write and code execution as SYSTEM.
