Root privilege escalation via world-writable account files
Published Mar 6, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Incorrect permissions in Wing FTP Server 6.2.3 allow local users to gain root privileges by forging fully privileged FTP accounts. The server creates each Data domain users directory with mode 777 and its per-user XML configuration files as world-readable and world-writable, allowing arbitrary account definitions to be added. Exploitation requires command execution as any host user; a forged account can then modify privileged system files through the HTTP interface.
