SYSTEM execution via unquoted service path
Published Jun 9, 2020 · Updated Sep 16, 2024
An unquoted search path in Lenovo Synaptics Smart Audio UWP App before 1.0.83.0 allows local users with administrator rights to gain SYSTEM. The app leaves the service name string for a binary under C:\Program Files\WindowsApps unquoted, so Windows can select C:\Program.exe instead. Exploitation requires administrator access to place Program.exe at the drive root; service launch executes it as NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM.
