Firmware rollback through missing CSME anti-rollback protection
Published Jun 9, 2020 · Updated Sep 16, 2024
Missing anti-rollback protection in Lenovo ThinkPad BIOS allows physically proximate attackers to restore older CSME firmware in flash. Lenovo identifies the locus as Intel CSME anti-rollback protection in system flash but does not disclose the failed check or code path. Physical access is required; the disclosed consequence is restoration of older CSME code, and Lenovo does not detail any subsequent compromise.
