Unauthenticated login bypass via loose hash comparison
Published Jan 27, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Type confusion in UseBB 1.0.12 allows remote attackers to bypass login authentication through crafted password hashes. The sources/panel_login.php check compares md5(stripslashes($_POST['passwd'])) with the stored hash using PHP's loose != operator, so magic hashes beginning with 0e and digits compare equal. An unauthenticated network attacker can submit a colliding password and obtain the targeted account's access, including administrative access when an administrator account is targeted.
